The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.
Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.
Athletes will gain the ability to challenge certain decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the practice currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review specific decisions, including:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
