Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Officials reported that the massive storm caused extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and homes washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. “A father frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and a second individual who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service stated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing were halted recently over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Researchers have found that the rate of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that intense storms cause approximately millions in dollars in damage to the country every year.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency last week due to the extensive devastation caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
